Boat Harbour

Thursday, December 20, 2001
TAS budget accommodation... Prepare to be charmed by Boat Harbour Village, as David shows you all you need to know to escape to the beach this summer.

Boat Harbour is a charming hamlet on the edge of Rocky Cape National Park on Tasmania's north-west coast. For most of the year it is home to only 40 or so people, but during the festive season the numbers can rise to more than 600. The Esplanade is the village's only street and the beach boasts white sand and clear blue water.

The closest place to shop is 10 minutes away at Wynyard, although there is a small grocery store at the caravan park run by the Luttmer family. They run 60 sites; both powered and non-powered. There are five on-site caravans plus a self-contained cabin and a bungalow. Other facilities include a laundromat, tennis courts, games room, campers' kitchen and coin-operated barbecues.

There's also a kiosk on the beach where you can rent wave skis and boogie boards. If you feel like a break from cooking, The Avalon is a cosy restaurant serving great food and overlooking Bass Strait. The restaurant is part of the Seaside Garden Motel, which has four motel units and two two-bedroom units.

Mark Newman from Dive Sight Charters takes adventurers on his catamaran Megashadan for fishing, diving and photography trips, plus sightseeing tours. You are very likely to see pods of dolphins and, if the time is right, migrating Southern Right Whales.

Mark is always willing to explain the history of the area. He'll help make a special itinerary for you, which could include lunch at Rocky Cape Lighthouse, or you could stroll along a pristine beach, look for fossils or visit concealed Aboriginal caves.
