How does six queen-size bedrooms, three bathrooms, a bar and a rooftop spa sound? This is five-star boating on the Murray at its finest.
Mannum has a population of 2000 and was settled in 1852 by William Randell who built the first paddle steamer. The Murray River starts in the Snowy Mountains and forms a significant past of the border between New South Wales and Victoria, before winding 650 kms through South Australia into the Southern Ocean.
Michael & Maureen Coory started Unforgettable Houseboats 7 years ago with just one boat. Now they have Unfortgettable I, II, III & IV, as well as management of four other boats. Unforgettable V & VI are under construction.
Wood panelling, carpet and granite are not what you would normally expect to find on a boat, but Unforgettable III is 5-star boating at its finest. There are six queen-sized bedrooms, three bathrooms, a bar and lounge/dining room with a table which seats 12. The boat is air-conditioned, has fresh drinking water, washing machine and dryer, all linen, a barbecue and even a six person spa on the roof.
Michael says anyone can drive a houseboat. On boarding you will be given a 1 hour tuition and issued a temporary permit for the duration of the hire.
About 4 hours north of Mannum is Bow Hill which has spectacular gold cliffs jutting up to 100 metres out of the water. The Murray is the perfect place for nature lovers, and at dusk you will see lots of cockatoos and pelicans coming in to nest for the night.
Mannum is on the Murray River, about 90km from Adelaide, or one and a half hours south-east from Adelaide.
Unforgettable Houseboats start at $1880 for four nights mid-week, and from $1990 for three night weekends. They run all year round.
