Australia's third largest island: Kangaroo Island

17:30 AEST Sat Mar 17 2012
Kangaroo Island — known by its 4400 residents as 'KI' — is wonderfully diverse. Australia's third largest island after Tasmania and Melville Island, it has soaring cliffs, dense forest, towering sand dunes, wetlands, superb white beaches and it’s packed with wildlife.

KI is a Great Place. We went there in last October 2011 school holidays.Need at least 3 days on the island to enjoy it. Plenty of options for both 2WD and 4WD driving. Plenty of camping spots. Accommodation is a bit limited. Food shopping is even more limited. 2 Pubs in Kingscote are best bet for a beer and reasonable dinner. Ferry trip is expensive go early or late to save. Many places of interest and touristy places. Get there and enjoy. Nat parks are good at far end of the island. Bring some wine with you from one of the local wine areas.
My Dad and I visited KI for three days in 2007. He was terminally ill with mesothelioma and it was our personal moment of farewell. We enjoyed a rental with superb northern views over the water, my home cooked meals, exploring the area and, best of all, peaceful time as father and son. We both loved KI and it was a priceless moment for both of us. He's gone now and I will always associate KI with giving us that rich moment to be treasured always.
