Kangaroo Island Health Retreat

Friday, January 31, 2003
Have your very own health package tailored to your needs — get the full treatment, get healthy!

Sue McCarthy owns the Kangaroo Island Health Retreat, which was formerly known as Shamrock Health Lodge. Sue tailors packages to suit individual guests, so each person there would probably be having different treatments and eating different foods.

Sue is a qualified nutritionist, dietitian, masseuse, naturopath and reflexologist. In 1980, Sue and her husband opened McCarthy Park in Western Australia. It was a ranch camp for children, with emphasis on fitness and good eating habits. Many of the children's mothers became keen and the McCarthys found success with a women's vigour camp. Then, in 1990, men began to attend the retreats, and many thousands of Western Australians found health, peace and their own spirit.

Next came a stint in Mole Creek, Tasmania, and now Kangaroo Island is the setting for the McCarthy mind, body and soul cleansing and motivation retreat where people find the path to healthy living. The McCarthys claim that visitors leave Kangaroo Island Health Retreat stronger in body and mind, with improved fitness and lower weight and an absence of years of toxic build-up.

There are two main packages: a three-day-long weekender or a seven-day intensive stay. Whichever one you choose, you will be assessed upon arrival, and a menu and treatment guide will be mapped out for you.

A three-day-long weekender package starts on Friday at 6pm and finishes at 5pm on Monday. Activities include yoga, walking, aerobics, swimming, sauna and plunge pool and therapeutic massage.

The seven-day rejuvenation program is four more days of the same, but you will have another therapeutic massage, and a fruit and juice cleanse.

The days begin at 7am with yoga and meditation, which is done in a large room with windows opening to views of the beautiful Emu Bay. Breakfast is served at 8, and at 9, everyone takes a beach walk and ocean swim, weather permitting. At 11am, you get to enjoy a spa, sauna and plunge and then rest and rejuvenate until lunchtime at 1pm. At 2pm, there is a nutrition lecture and a wonderful massage at 3. At 5pm, you'll enjoy a pleasant walk before dinner, which is served at 8pm.

If the thought of feeling hungry is of concern to you, stop worrying! The McCarthys serve a huge range of nutritious, organically grown food, and plenty of it. A look at their menu is positively mouth-watering.

The bedrooms are tastefully appointed and each one has a television and fan. The lounge is a comfortable room with music and a library.

All you need to take are casual clothes, bathers, work-out gear, tracksuit, joggers, hat and camera. What you are forbidden to take are cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, chewing gum and peppermints.

Kangaroo Island, 16km off South Australia's coast.
