Cable Hang-gliding

Thursday, January 9, 2003
An adrenalin rush for the junkies of fast and furious adventure — dive into the open air.

Paul Gutekunst of Air Borne Action loves to indulge in hobbies that are fast and furious. He has been a speedway racer, a water skier and jet skier, paraglider and lake tobogganist. But the man who can't sit still has a new venture — he's set up the highest and longest cable hang-gliding/skydiving project in Australia and for a lot of people, it is the most adventurous, dare-devilish thing they have ever done.

Cable hang-gliding has an advantage over traditional hang-gliding — people feel (and are) much safer with the cable attachment, so, it's perfect for those who have always wanted to hang-glide but who have never been game. It's also good therapy for those with a fear of heights!

Here's how it works: You stand on a platform and are strapped into a harness. You are then attached to the cable, which acts as a safety line, and then attached to the aluminium glider wings. You then drop from a height of 50m over a 300m length, and once you are at the bottom, you are winched up so you can have another go!

For some people, cable hang-gliding is too tame and leisurely, so they head for the cable skydiving. It operates from the same platform and along the same cable as the hang-glider, but the platform is a little higher, you also have leg straps and the glider and hand bar are removed as you dive off. At the bottom, you turn around and are pulled back to the platform.

The general opinion is that cable skydiving gives a much freer feeling — you get an adrenalin rush when you dive into the open air, and feel as though you are really flying.
