Deep Creek Conservation Park

Thursday, November 2, 2000
Explore or relax? Homestead or cottage? These are the questions you face when you hit the glorious Fleurieu Peninsula.

Not far from Kangaroo Island is the Heysen Trail, named after Australian painter Sir Hans Heysen. The trail is 1500 kilometres, winding from Cape Jervis to Parachilna Gorge in the Flinders Ranges. Quite manageable in one day is a 19km walk through the Deep Creek Conservation Park.

Barry Duykers and Jane Formato of Southern Ocean Retreats are very familiar with the Heysen Trail. They provide cabin and homestead accommodation along the way for those who don’t want to carry heavy backpacks. Surrounded by wildlife, these cabins are the ideal base from which to explore or just relax in.

Deep Creek Homestead is a secluded four-star property. From the balcony you can see the creek flowing to the Southern Ocean. Self-contained facilities include master bedroom, formal lounge with wood fire, jarrah floors, tennis court and barbecue.

Glenburn Cottage is a favourite with families and overlooks Stringybark Forest. The elevated deck is perfect for bird and kangaroo watching. It has four bedrooms and self-contained facilities.

Goondooloo Cottage combines charm with character. It has a sunroom with indoor trees and large windows offering wonderful views. The kitchen is an open galley and has beautiful rivergum benchtops.

The Park has five campsites with differing facilities. Visitors are required to pay a nominal fee to enter and camp in Deep Creek Conservation Park. Day passes and camping permits are available at registration stations.

A great variety of flora and fauna can be seen here. Trails are clearly marked with warning and information signs.
