Ceduna scenic flight

Thursday, February 25, 2010
The Great Australian Bight extends more than 1200km from Cape Pasley in WA to Cape Catastrophe at the entrance of Spencer Gulf in SA. It is an area of spectacular cliffs and rocky headlands, offshore islands, beaches pounded by enormous waves and sheltered bays. It's remote, uninhabited and one of Australia's most spectacular wilderness regions.

There's probably no tougher road trip in Australia than the drive across the Great Australian Bight, and if you've bitten off more than you can chew, Dermott Brereton has found a way to relax, avoid corrugated roads and enjoy the beauty of it all.

Chinta Air Tours operates from Ceduna in SA and has a variety of flights to choose from. They will even help you design your own itinerary.

Their fleet of aircraft are maintained to highest safety standards and each offers comfortable seating, headsets to allow in-flight conversation and listen to the pilot's commentary and a window seat for each passenger.

It's all made easy for passengers. You are taken to an airstrip close to your destination and documentation and other travel irritations are taken care of.

Tours depart on demand with a minimum of two passengers. They are a complete package including sole use of the aircraft, accommodation, meals and four-wheel drive tours at destinations.

Accommodation can be found at either luxury stations, safari camps, hosted B & Bs or boutique wilderness lodges. Whatever you opt for, you'll be assured of knowledgeable guides with local experience.

Dermott loved the brilliant colours of the landscape and ocean and was thrilled to see a mother and calf Southern Right whale frolicking below. They visit between June and October and there are special flights to watch them.

Another highlight was flying over the Bunda Cliffs. The magnificent 65m-high cliffs stretch in an unbroken line for 200km to the WA border.

Chinta Air Tours with four-hour Whale Watching at Nullarbor start at $360 per person for four passengers. For 30-minute tours there's a minimum of two passengers. Light refreshments are taken at Nullarbor Hotel.
