Southern Ocean Lodge

Thursday, June 19, 2008
Kangaroo Island, Australia's third largest island after Tasmania and Melville Island, is 112km south-west of Adelaide at the entrance of Gulf Saint Vincent. It closest point to the mainland is 13km offshore from Cape Jervis on the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Acclaimed as "Australia's Galapagos", Kangaroo Island is home to an abundance of wildlife and natural attractions. More than one-third of the island has been declared as conservation area or national park, so visitors readily come face-to-face with bird and animal species such as New Zealand fur seals, koalas, kangaroos, Australian sea lions, ospreys and echidnas.

Flanked by the Southern Ocean, unspoiled dramatic coastal vistas and sculptured landscapes are riddled with sheer limestone cliffs, sheltered coves, rocky headlands and deserted stretches of sugar-white sand.

Against a natural backdrop, Kangaroo Island has a strong epicurean culture, supported by local seafood and produce and the wineries of South Australia's Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills and Clare Valley.

The opening of Southern Ocean Lodge has given Kangaroo Island its first true luxury accommodation. Sitting on a secluded cliff top on a rugged stretch of coast, it has uninterrupted views of the Southern Ocean and island wilderness.

The lodge has 21 suites which cantilever along the coast. Each have a king bed, sunken lounge, glass-walled bathroom and outdoor terrace with seating and daybed. They also have walk-in robes, room bar, housekeeping twice daily, climate control, heated flooring, in-room safe and television in selected suites.

Sandblasted limestone floors and recycled spotted gum feature walls, set off by contemporary furnishings and artworks of Kangaroo Island artists, all blend to create relaxing accommodation.

A spa retreat, high on a cliff, is an oasis with a steam room, chill out lounge and spa cuisine program. Professional staff use Australian-made Li'tya products which work with the highly-oxygenised air flowing in from the Antarctic.

The owners are committed to the environment and to ensuring long-term sustainability of the lodge and its surrounds.
