What a ride

Adelaide Jetboat

Thursday, May 26, 2005

Take a thrilling trip from Adelaide's CBD to the beachside suburb of Glenelg.

Dennis Payne, owner of Helava Jet, can take you in his nine-metre boat, the world's first open-sea, fully-enclosed jet boat. Designed and built in South Australia, the twin 5.9 litre diesel turbo-charged engines can get up to 85km/h. It went through vigorous testing before its launch and drivers are fully trained and accredited.

Passengers are strapped into race-style seats and harnesses and the boat goes into a series of manoeuvres, sudden 180° turns and "reverse stoppies" over a thrilling 20 minutes, running parallel to the Glenelg foreshore, completing a round trip to Willunga. (Just in case you were wondering, a reverse stoppie happens when the boat is travelling at 75km/h, the driver knocks it into reverse, the nose goes underwater and waves splash over the entire boat.)

Fitted with state-of-the-art safety features, the boat gives up to 12 passengers a dry but adrenaline-packed ride which cannot be done anywhere else in the world.

When the ride is over and everything has settled down, Zucca is the place for lunch. Ocean views complement the restaurant's modern Greek cuisine. Three chefs have combined to provide great dining as enjoyed in Greek homes and a dessert lecturer uses old and new methods of producing those decadent Greek sweets.
