Willunga House

Thursday, August 31, 2000
You almost expect Scarlett and Rhett to greet you at the door of this beautiful, heritage-listed Georgian manor; lovingly restored and renowned for its home-cooked feasts.

Willunga House is a heritage-listed Georgian stone residence built in 1850 to serve as the first general store and post office for the village of Willunga.

Henry Malpas operated the store from the front room of the four-room cottage. As it prospered and grew, so did the house. By 1866 a second storey and balcony and new wing had been added. The Malpas family lived in the house for 109 years and it remained very much in its original state.

Now it is owned by Rosie and Kingsley Knott. They had been house-hunting for some months when they first saw Willunga House in 1981, but because of its then exterior appearance, dismissed it. Someone convinced them to look inside and once they did, they bought the property on the spot.

The next 19 years were spent repairing, renovating, restoring and remodelling — they have re-roofed sections, replastered many internal walls, created six bathrooms, replumbed the entire house, rewired it, replaced or relaid floors, restored windows, installed air-conditioning and used litres and litres of paint.

The result is a beautiful b&b, fully renovated but still with all its original character. Each of the five rooms is furnished with antiques and brass and iron beds. Some rooms have a fireplace and some have an ensuite. Those that don't have a bathroom just across the hall.

The original marble fireplace, cedar cupboards and some of the cedar skirtings and architraves are a feature of the residence, as well as the large slabs of Willunga slate which form the floors of the downstairs rooms and cellar. The cellar features beautiful craftsmanship in the joists, which are made from pit-sawn local red gum.

Kingsley Knott is a qualified masseuse and you may like to enjoy the luxury of a massage during your stay. You can also relax in the guest sitting room, which has an open fireplace and French doors leading to the balcony. In there you will find plenty of puzzles, games and a selection of music; for summer months there is a solar-heated pool.

The Knotts are renowned for their home-cooked meals and breakfasts are a feast. They use a great variety of home-grown and locally grown produce.

Willunga is in the McLaren Vale wine area of South Australia and sits at the foot of the hills, surrounded by almond groves and vineyards. The town is a beautiful place to relax in and you can visit numerous heritage-listed dwellings.

Willunga is about 50km south of Adelaide.
