Drummond Point safari

Thursday, August 31, 2006

The rugged rock formations of Eyre Peninsula coastline were carved by the full force of the Southern Ocean. There are long sandy beaches, sheltered bays and towering cliffs along the Great Australian Bight and almost half of it is reserves, parks and native bushland.

Drummond Point is a dot on the map, 700 kilometres from Adelaide. If you want to have a good look around with a local, contact David Doudle of Goin' Off Safaris in Port Lincoln. His passion for exploring the Lower Eyre Peninsula and beyond is contagious.

A third-generation local farmer, David has spent 30 years refining his wealth of experience and offering personal and entertaining tours. His previous jobs as sheep shearer and aquatics instructor add to his knowledge and stories.

David takes four-day and 10-day tours in his 4WD with a customised off-road trailer. Everything has been thought of to ensure a comfortable and interesting day.

A tour might include sightseeing, swimming with seals, paddling with dolphins, feeding native animals and a beautiful sunset. This is followed by a delicious seafood dinner accompanied by wine and local guitarists around a campfire. There are plenty of yarns to be told before putting your head down in the Famous Aussie Swag under millions of stars. Other accommodation enjoyed on David's tours include luxurious waterfront apartments.

Coffin Bay township is on the shores of one of the most beautiful estuaries in Australia. It has meandering waterways with bays, channels and inlets providing a variety of fishing. Perfect as a family holiday retreat, its population swells from 430 to 2000 in summer. Coffin Bay has excellent fishing — rock, surf, angling and boat — and its oysters are some of the most succulent to be found.
