Noosa is a great place for a holiday, but if you fancy somewhere less crowded and cheaper, Noosaville, just five minutes away, is the answer. The suburb on the Noosa River has loads of accommodation, activities and eating places, and is an ideal location for a family holiday.

The river is a great source of things to do, including fishing, jet skiing, sailing and boating. It is a most important feature of the area and over the years has been transformed into a playground for water enthusiasts and nature lovers. It is beautifully pristine and flows through the Cooloola and Great Sandy national parks, bordered by unspoilt bushland, rainforests and beautiful foreshores. It is a flora and fauna sanctuary and it's wonderful that so much plant and birdlife happily survive in their natural habitats so close to urban activity.

The Noosa Ferry tugs along the river six times a day, so you can go into Noosa without worrying about driving and parking.

If you fancy hiring a boat, visit Pelican Boat Hire's jetty and choose from their fleet. The family business has a well-stocked shop with bait and tackle and their on-site mechanical workshop ensures reliability. They sell snacks and drinks and local cafes provide picnic lunches.

Pelican can put you on board a six-seater runabout; half-cabin cruiser; six-seater Sunchaser; eight-seater Bowrider; eight- to 10-seater Odessa; barbecue pontoon for six, eight, 10, 12 or 16; or a 10-seater Parti Kraft.

The boat hire company also provides maps so you can cruise at your own leisure. Check out Noosa Sound and the canal system with its superb homes.

Gympie Terrace is the area's Golden Mile. It runs alongside the river and has great shops, cafes and some great places to sample local seafood.

One establishment on Gympie Terrace, which is surely visited by every female who goes to Noosa, is Noosa Shoes. It has been there for 20 years and is crammed with fantastic footwear. They have hundreds of styles in every colour and for every occasion — not just holiday footwear. Once people have visited, they continue to shop there through the Internet.

Tables and chairs outside the shop have a sign saying "this table belongs to Noosa Shoes for tired husbands and weary Noosa Shoe shoppers". That says it all!

If you fancy a night out in one of your new pairs of shoes, Madissons Restaurant and Bar could be just right. It offers casual dining from 7am to midnight and has one of the best views of the Noosa River. The modern Australian menu and long wine list are enjoyed in relaxed and casual surroundings.

Munna Beach Apartments on Gympie Terrace enjoy water views from their prime location. They are self-contained and spacious, and many guests return over and over.

Choose between two- and three-bedroom apartments overlooking the Noosa River or gardens and pool area. Holidaying there is easy, with dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, all linen and cooking utensils provided. It's a wonderful place for a family holiday, and there are tropical gardens and tall palms to relax in.

Hear, hear - the "Garlic Strip" is the toast of the town now! Millionaires row [all the flash 3 story apartments along the waterfront that is] denying ordinary people their river-front holidays - the only true exception is the Council Caravan Park at Munna Point - book early to get in! Foodies be prepared to spend big or it's back to basics - fish 'n chips. Barbies along the river are a refuge from the generally over-priced restaurants.
finally the rest of australia has caught on to what the locals have known all along, Noosaville is the perfect place to stay and eat in the noosa shire. Try staying at the Islander Noosa resort - with lagoon pool, 2 other pools, hot tubs, accross from the river, at the back of the shopping complex and with a 10% dining voucher offered to guests by the surrounding restaurants, these 2 bed units are unreal value. For dining out try Magic of India - if you can't get a reservation, try their takeaway section and Greeny's Seafood Restaurant. makes me green with envy that I can't be there now.
