Noosa Motor Glider

Thursday, July 20, 2000
One of the best ways to take in the Sunshine Coast is from a Diamond in the Sky motor glider with Catriona.

The glider's instrumentation is state-of-the-art, including a global positioning system and equipment for finding thermals. This ensures safety, as nothing is left to chance. If no thermals are detected, the engine is not turned off. As a precaution, Lewis only turns the engine off when he is near an airstrip or airfield.

The two-seater craft has a 1.2-litre engine, a 16.5m wing span and a glass bubble canopy. The average gliding speed with the motor off is about 90km/h and the great thing is that it can go closer to the beautiful beaches and mountains than a normal aircraft ever could.

One of the rules when gliding is that the pilot gives the passenger a flying lesson. Once at an altitude of about 1300m, the engine is cut and the glider is powered purely by thermal winds.

All Diamond in the Sky trips start at Maroochydore Airport and go north-west to Cooroy, then east to Noosa and then south along the coastline where you get a bird's-eye view of Alexandria Bay and the strip's famous beaches — Sunshine, Sunrise, Peregian and Coolum — and sometimes dolphins or whales off Hervey Bay.

Lewis will cater for special requests such as a flight to the Glasshouse Mountains, Fraser Island or anywhere in the general vicinity, and only if requested by the passenger, he will perform semi-aerobatics — steep turns, wings over, weightlessness for about three seconds and a nose dive — definitely not for those with a weak stomach!

The Sunshine Coast Airport, about 30 minutes from Noosa.

A one-hour trip costs $192.50. Bookings are essential, and they operate year round, seven days a week (weather permitting) out of Maroochydore Airport. Gift vouchers are available.
Please note prices are valid at time of transmission and to the best of our knowledge are inclusive of GST.
