Five-star luxury at Airlie Beach

09:00 AEST Thu Jul 15 2010
Airlie Beach is the gateway to a Whitsunday Island holiday. Being a Queenslander, Natalie Gruzlewski is quite understandably biased about how much beauty there is to enjoy on the islands, but on her last visit, she decided to spend some time on the mainland in Airlie before heading out to sea.

Airlie's main swimming beach is about the same latitude as Tahiti, Hawaii and the Bahamas and that means swimming year-round, although stingers are a problem between November and May. Water temperature rarely drops below 20°C.

Backpackers and those looking for a budget holiday are well-looked after at Airlie Beach. But for those looking for a special break the new Peppers Coral Coast, the only local five-star resort, promises luxury and then some.

Peppers is fancy and family-friendly at the same time. The latest in the Peppers family has 102 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments decked out with everything, including the kitchen sink. Guests are treated to uninterrupted views of the Whitsunday Passage and its islands. The whole experience is relaxing and romantic.

If you are there at stinger time, cool off in the resort's wet edge pool and visit the modern day spa for a special treat.

Views are also enjoyed from Tides Restaurant and Bar. Executive chef Greg Devine has a passion for fresh Australian produce. He creates a fantastic array of dishes to tantalise the tastebuds in an open kitchen. Start the evening with your favourite cocktail or try a new one.

There is a good choice of everything from five-star restaurants to casual cafes in Airlie if you fancy a change of scenery.
