Bedarra Island Resort

Thursday, February 9, 2006
Welcome to Australia's most exclusive, luxurious island! This is a playground for the rich and famous and it is divine!

Bedarra Island Resort is 40ha of exclusive private luxury on the Great Barrier Reef, a 40-minute charter flight south of Cairns. It is a place where time is measured only by the rising and setting of the sun, moon and stars.

Fifteen villas (meaning a maximum 30 guests) are tucked into rainforest. Balconies allow you to make the most of the hypnotic views.

Two pavilions, removed from the main resort, are open-plan and feature timber and glass. They were designed to create an indoor/outdoor ambience and overlook Wedgerock Bay.

The spacious sleeping area features a floating bed, with separate oversized bathroom with shower and deep bath overlooking rainforest. There is a walk-in robe and the beautifully-appointed living area has banquette seating, large television, video, work desk with phone and computer and a stocked bar. The deck has a private plunge pool, sun lounges, daybed and dining setting. Each afternoon, guests receive a delivery of ice and canapé platter.

The two villas, one double storey, one split level, were designed to blend in with the beautiful surroundings. Each is in lush, tropical rainforest with total privacy. Interiors are contemporary and comfortable, with polished timber floors and furnishings in neutral colours with subtle marine accents. Oversized and well-stocked bathrooms have deep baths. Outdoors is a hammock from where you can enjoy views of Hernandia Bay and other islands.

The Point is accessed by a private path through rainforest. It is on an elevated beachside site with floor plan and inclusions similar to those of the split-level villa. There are magnificent views. The large, private deck has a luxurious daybed, sun lounges and plunge pool.

The open-terrace restaurant overlooks a cascading pool. A la carte breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in your tariff. The head chef is more than happy to whip up a guest's whim. And if whim ingredients aren't at hand, they will be flown in, given 24 hours notice. Green ant ice cream was one of the most unusual requests — and it was fulfilled! Gourmet hampers can be prepared for beachside enjoyment and special seafood platters arranged.

The resort has a relaxed bar and lounge, open 24 hours. It is self-service, stocked with Australian and imported beer, champagne and a quality selection of wine, spirits and liqueurs.

There are lots of complimentary activities to enjoy. Paddle skis, fishing, snorkelling and motorised dinghies let you get the most from the magnificent surrounding waters and beaches and nearby islands. Self-guided island walks, nature trails and tennis (day and night) are also available, all free of charge.

Charges do apply to snorkelling and scuba-diving trips to the reef via Dunk Island, therapeutic massage and limited body treatments in the massage room, private reef fishing and sailing charters and a variety of activities on Dunk Island, Bedarra's next-island neighbour.
