David is onboard the new train to Cairns … this super-train is fast but very peaceful.
Queensland's Tilt Train is a comfortable and innovative way to travel between Brisbane and Cairns.
Tilt technology enhances running time by allowing higher travel speeds of up to 160km/h, making the journey 25 hours, with stops along the way. By tilting the train body, the speed around curves can be increased by 15 percent while maintaining passenger comfort levels. On-board computers control the tilt angle, which is activated by compressed air cylinders located between the train body and the bogies.
The train has six carriages and has facilities for disabled travellers. Five economy-class carriages have 280 seats and one business-class carriage has 27 seats. Each seat has built-in footrests and video audio controls in the armrests and all carriages feature secured overhead lockers and luggage racks. Every toilet has a baby change table.
Economy carriages have two seats on either side of the central aisle and the business-class carriage has dual and single seating, with seats which rotate to face whichever way the passenger wants.
All carriages are air-conditioned, there are pay telephones and a fax machine and a driver perspective system which allows passengers to see the driver's view.
A well-stocked Club Car is the perfect place to enjoy meals and snacks and a good place to meet other passengers. If you prefer, you can pre-arrange to dine at your seat from the Tilt Train's trolley.
