This is a one stop, jam-packed, flat chat day out on the reef!
Back in 1979 when Port Douglas was a tiny fishing village, Quicksilver started operating with just one catamaran. They took the first commercial trip to the Low Isles, 15km north-east of Port Douglas, to the beautiful coral cays.
Now with a fleet of five highly-advanced cruising vessels, their philosophy is still "carefree but organised". This is obvious from the second you board their craft for the 90-minute trip to their platform.
You have the choice of day trips or extended cruises in absolute comfort and style. The edge of Australia's continental shelf holds a world full of dazzling colour and brilliance.
Quicksilver is the only day-tour company permitted to visit the magnificent ribbon reef, Agincourt, which is a wonderful example of the magic of the Great Barrier Reef. The Quicksilver Platform is on the Agincourt Reef lagoon, well known for its exceptional visibility and biodiversity. There you can swim, snorkel and dive with 1000 species of tropical fish and marvel at 200 varieties of coral. Visibility and temperature are perfect year round.
You can dive with a certified instructor, snorkel with or without an instructor or take a 45-minute guided snorkelling tour with a qualified marine biologist. Fish-feeding sessions happen throughout the day.
Quicksilver VIII, the flagship of the fleet, cruises at 35 knots and comfortably seats 400 passengers. On the trip to the platform you can enjoy videos about marine and reef biology and ecology and discuss your day's snorkelling and diving with instructors.
Those who prefer not to enter the water for whatever reason won't miss out on anything! They still get the full experience from the underwater observatory and a 25-minute semi-submersible cruise around the lagoon. You can also get a bird's eye view from a helicopter.
A typical day tour begins with a wavepiercer collecting passengers in Cairns and heading for Port Douglas for more passengers. Morning tea is served on board. At 10am you leave for the outer Barrier Reef and at 11.30am your reef activities begin.
Hot and cold buffet lunch is served at noon on the platform. Tables and chairs are set up under umbrellas and sails for those who have had sufficient sun. Plenty of fresh prawns, pasta, meat, salad and tropical fruit are served and there is a full bar for purchase of drinks.
The vessel leaves Agincourt Reef at 3pm, arriving in Port Douglas at 4.30pm. Transfers on the wavepiercer or coach take you back to Cairns.
Quicksilver Helicopters fly low over the reef to give views of its amazing eco-system. They show you where two worlds meet from the rainforest canopy of the World Heritage rainforest across the green and blue waters of the reef. The helicopter lands at Agincourt on the very edge of the reef and you join the Quicksilver vessel and platform for a day of activities. You can return to Port Douglas or Cairns aboard the wavepiercing catamaran or in the helicopter.
To enjoy this wonderful experience, all you need is a camera, swimming costume and towel, hat, sunscreen and shirt, cash for drinks, shopping and optional tours.
