Catriona shows us the fastest way to whip around the Whitsundays for a whole lot of fun in the sun.
Ocean Rafting offers adventure, participation, education and a natural environment.
Peter and Jan Claxton's company, which won Queensland's Adventure Tourism Award in 2001, takes you on a fast tour around the Whitsundays. But the quickness doesn't mean you miss anything. Give them a day and they will make sure you get the most out of the wonderful Whitsundays.
Peter's background is one of adventure. He is a sea-plane pilot and at one time ran a marine safari charter company in South Africa.
Ocean Rafting holds accreditation from the Ecotourism Association of Australia and you certainly get your money's worth. Travelling at 30 knots is beneficial you can explore vast areas in one day and the design of the vessel reduces fuel usage as well as impact on the environment.
They use 11m rigid inflatable boats with semi-rigid hulls of aluminium and inflatable sides and two 225 four stroke Yamaha engines. Seventy percent of the boat is under shade, providing protection from the tropical sun. There is a maximum of 25 passengers on each vessel and two crew members ensure everyone gets personal service.
Lunch is at Whitehaven Beach, which has been called the world's most beautiful beach. Its talcum-like sand is made of silica quartz as opposed to ground shells and coral. You can walk to the lookout and the ancient volcanic vent and snorkel the reef which is full of colourful and interesting marine life. Snorkel gear and flotation devices are supplied.
If you are there between June and August you are likely to see humpback whales and their babies playing in the beautiful water.
