Barrington Tops trail bikes

Thursday, November 30, 2006

Dungog is a typical Australian country town in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales. It has a wide main street and is surrounded by rolling hills adjacent to the Williams River. Its other river is the Paterson. It has a population of just 2500 and is essentially a cattle, dairy and timber town.

It's a great base for those wanting to explore the fine surrounding countryside, Chichester Dam, state forests and Barrington Tops National Park. Excellent bushwalking, scenic drives, swimming, horse riding, camping and canoeing are all enjoyed there.

Barrington Tops Trail Bike Adventures & Cabins, run by Glen and Alyson Charlton, have some well put-together and all-inclusive packages.

One-day tour #1
Start early with your riding gear and bike full of fuel. They supply all fuel, food and drinks, sweep rider and 4WD support car. You cover around 130 kilometres and arrive back at 4pm.

One-day tour #2
A night's accommodation is included, as well as breakfast, lunch, drinks, fuel, sweep rider and 4WD support car. Also covers around 130 kilometres.

Two-day tour
Two nights' accommodation, two breakfasts, two lunches, one dinner, drinks, fuel, sweep rider and 4WD support car. Ride around 130 kilometres each day. Your cars are left at the property and gear is loaded into the support car which meets you at the pub.

Most riding is on maintained trails with long hills, beautiful river crossings and rainforest areas.

Chichester Forest Cabins are self-contained, sitting on 56 hectares with sweeping views of the valley and Dungog Township.

They are large, with wide verandas, two comfortable bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchen/living areas. There are microwave ovens, television, ceiling fans, log fires and outside barbecues.

Cabins sleep eight. All linen is supplied, as are campfire amenities, just metres away.

Rides start at 9am with a maximum of 20 riders and a minimum of 16. Riders must be registered and licensed and arrive with a full tank of fuel. They don't have bikes for hire. They operate every weekend, excluding long weekends and school holidays.
