In 1848 the HMS Rattlesnake set sail with 180 crew to survey the uncharted inner Great Barrier Reef from Dunk Island to the strait separating Australia from Papua New Guinea. A survey station was established in Trinity Bay and Captain Stanley named the intriguing island with mountain peak appearance Double Island.
The turn of the century saw the island as a retreat for the staff of mining companies and it has changed ownership many times. The privately held property is a real alternative to more commercial resorts and is only for rental on a "whole-of-island" basis, meaning only one party has the exclusive of the 19 x ½ km island and its facilities.
Just a 10-minute boat ride from the mainland, Double Island has lots of palm trees, bushland, landscaped tropical gardens, sandy beaches and full accommodation and entertainment complex.
Three types of accommodation are available. Garden view rooms have one bedroom, marble bathroom and private balcony.
Apartments also have one bedroom, have open plan lounge/dining, luxury bathroom, fully equipped kitchenette and either a plunge pool or outdoor spa.
Safari rooms are canvas tent structures just metres from the water. They are permanent structures with timber floors, bathroom, cooling fans and décor is animal/safari theme.
Garden rooms and apartments can be joined together. Both are air conditioned.
Food is not included, but catering can be organised and facilities include a full commercial-size kitchen, fully equipped bar and outdoor barbecue with wonderful views. There are endless places to enjoy meals, indoors or al fresco.
The games room has a quiet library room, computer and internet access, indoor cinema, television and surround sound system, pool and table tennis tables and computer game stations. There is also an outdoor cinema where you can enjoy the latest films under the stars.
The gymnasium is air conditioned and has the latest exercise equipment. There are also walking tracks leading to a variety of points which have views across the Coral Sea. The 25m pool is heated and the outdoor spa includes a wading area and deck chairs and is located close to the Long Room restaurant and bar.
Outdoor and beach activities include the use of catamarans, jet skis, windsurfers, canoes, kayaks and motorised dinghies.
If you come up with anything else you would like to do, the Double Island booking agents will organise it for you.
Cape York Helicopters can transport you to and from the island or they can arrange heli-fishing trips or general aerial tours of the beautiful area.
