Over the past few weeks, grey nomad Des Richards, aka Jules Lund, has given tour guides around Australia a run for their money. Des's quest was to find out if operators are friendly to everyone all the time, or just when they know Getaway
The stakes were raised when he attended Australian Stunt Academy on Queensland's Gold Coast. Colin Handley was in on the sting, but guides Christian Lind and Nathan Innes were not. Jules and Colin wanted to see if they would remain cool, calm and collected professionals when their class is put under threat by the bumbling Des.
There are loads of things to learn at the academy and Des was signed up to learn some of the tricky James Bond techniques.
He wasn't happy using a wooden knife he wanted the real thing. He volunteered when guides asked for one, and was generally a pest, though not an obnoxious one.
He talked a lot and wanted to introduce his own stunts such as pretending to being pushed in front of a bus, but Christian and Nathan didn't bat an eyelid.
The adage of old dogs having difficulty learning new tricks was brought into question when lethal weapons were introduced. Firing arrows is a special talent of Des, it seems. He says they call him Dead-Eye Dick at his RSL Club.
After reciting part a long part of the script of his favourite film, 'Braveheart', it was time to reveal his true identity. The mask was off.
Jules was truly impressed by the patience of not only his guides, but other participants in the class. It was all great fun and we wonder where and when Des will pop up again!
