Gold Coast by helicopter

Thursday, September 30, 2010
The excitement of piloting a helicopter sent Jules Lund's thoughts to a favourite scene in the movie The Matrix. Seems Trinity gets a lifetime of flying expertise uploaded into her mind in seconds. Now it was Jules' turn.

He's been a passenger in a helicopter loads of times filming Getaway stories and once he was allowed to "hijack" a flight to go over his house!

Now it was time to do it legitimately and he was in the hands of Dan Egan of Helibiz Training School on the Gold Coast for a hands-on introductory flight experience. They are a helicopter sales, service and flight training facility.

It was straight into the pilot's seat of the Robinson for Jules to fulfil a dream. Students need no experience but there needs to be excellent communication between them and the pilot as to who has control of the aircraft. It's done by repeating phrases such as "Dan, I have control" which reinforces to both parties just what's going on.

After saying a prayer or two and when perspiration turned into sweat, Jules absolutely took to the experience in no time and his confidence took over. Of all the things he thought he couldn't do, all of a sudden he was doing them. Just like Trinity! He described the gentle feeling of the helicopter was almost dreamlike.

The experience shows the Gold Coast in a whole new light. Over skyscrapers, rainforest, hinterland canals and the long strip of golden beach.

Jules found the experience overwhelmingly wonderful and reckons it would be the perfect gift for that person in your life who is so difficult to buy for.
