Gold Coast hinterland to harbour

Thursday, March 5, 2009
Australia's number one holiday playground isn't just all about sun and sand. If you want a break from that you don't really need to go to a theme park. For a real adventure, why not head for the Hinterland, in particular the untouched Numinbah Valley where you can do some exploring. Or maybe have a go at jet skiing. Natalie Gruzlewski showed her skills at both.

ATV Quad Bike Tours

This Gold Coast company is offering tag-along self-drive ATV tours of the beautiful valley alongside Binna Burra Rainforest and heritage-listed Springbrook National Park. You'll see Lamington National Park and Mt Warning, down in New South Wales.

Riders spend two thrilling hours navigating an ATV on various trails and even through a river. There are lots of lookout points and a stop for morning or afternoon tea, high on a ridge.

Safety is a high priority and along with an experienced guide you will have a safety briefing and be provided with all riding equipment. The four-wheeled bikes are pretty stable, easy to handle and can reach 60km/h.

They aren't restricted to the Hinterland. You can whizz around the Gold Coast, but wherever you choose to go, you should wear long pants and must have closed shoes.

Jet Ski Safaris

Head for the Pacific Ocean and along the beaches of Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads with Jet Ski Safaris. The company specialises in serious fun and adventure and takes you through narrow tidal passages, snaking through mangrove everglades.

It has recently added five four-stroke Yamaha FX140 cruisers to its fleet. The cruisers seat two people comfortably, so you can share the fun and the cost. They are self-drive and you don't need experience or a licence. Take your camera and sunnies and don't forget to slip, slap and slop.

You'll probably call in to Tipplers camping ground on South Stradbroke Island. It's a bit of an institution and a bit like the local pub for Gold Coasters with a boat or jet ski. On weekends you could see a hundred jet skis on the beach, sharing space with fishermen in tinnies. You're also bound to see some wallabies.

Location

Queensland's Gold Coast.

Gold Coast Jet Ski Safaris offers 40-minute, one-hour and two-hour trips and run every day from dawn to dusk. The 40-minute trip costs $60 per person for two or $120 for a single. One-hour trips are $100 per person or $200 for a single and two-hour trips cost $160 per person or $320 single. The company provides all safety equipment and at least two expert, licensed guides.
