If you like go-karts, you'll love Twister Buggies. Welcome to the hottest motor sport action to hit Australia, with 600 metres of twisting dirt track to challenge your skills.
Buggies are for off-road dirt and gravel track racing. Regular go-karts are six-horsepower, while buggies are 10-horsepower and have 150cc, four-stroke single cylinder engines. The rear-wheel-drive buggies have been geared so they slide easily. The track is marked with orange cones and if you happen to drift off, you just end up on grass.
With an accelerator and brake and no gears, they are very easy to operate. They are low to the ground and reach up to 50 kph. The adrenaline gets going as the wet track has you drifting and sliding.
Buggies are fully roll caged with four-point safety harnesses and suspension. Helmet and overalls are supplied and surgical booties slip over your shoes.
For safety reasons, buggies don’t compete against each other they are spaced about 20 metres apart in 15-minute sessions every hour.
Before you start, there is a briefing about safety rules. Participants then follow the instructor for a parade lap so you become familiar with the track layout. There is plenty of trackside space for onlookers and a shaded verandah and your adventure can be captured on film.
Pimpama, a half hour drive from Brisbane.
Buggy Mania is run by WRX Experience and a 15-minute session starts at $40 per person. Two sessions are $70.
Please note that the prices listed are valid at the time of filming.
