Tugun on Queenslands coast

Thursday, July 12, 2007

Tugun is quite close to Coolangatta Airport. The small town offers a Gold Coast holiday away from the hectic pace of Surfers Paradise, making it more relaxing for those wanting that sort of vacation. There are long, golden patrolled beaches and lots of activities and restaurants to fill your days and nights.

The Currumbin Oceanway begins at Tugun Surf Club. It is one of the best walks around and if you take a detour and cross a quaint bridge through Kropp Park you will find hidden wetlands.

The Tugun Surf Life Saving Club began patrols in 1925. It is very important to the area and Ky Hurst is one of its better-known competitors. He began surfing at the age of two and began swimming training by the age of seven.

At just 22 years of age, he has reached amazing goals. Several Ironman titles and many other awards have his name beside them and he has been named one of the greatest lifesavers of all time. Ky's younger brother, Dane, is also a national Ironman titleholder and their mother, Kerrie, is a champion surf lifesaver.

The recently renovated club has a new bistro menu and you can enjoy a full meal, coffee and cake or just a drink on the broad verandah overlooking the beach.

One of the coast's best secrets are six beautifully restored 1950s beachside bungalows, right across the road from the surf club. Each has two bedrooms, full kitchen and outdoor barbecue area. Perfect for a family or couple, they are just right for relaxing and having a real beach holiday.

Chris Buist is the owner of the houses and when he bought them there were run down and in need of repair. Fortunately his original plan of razing them and building luxury houses went by-the-by when he recognised their unique value to the area. He has restored them to their original glory.

If you don't fancy cooking at home, there are cafés and restaurants walking distance away.

Tugun Beach Houses start at around $615 a week for up to four people.
