Our Gold Coast guest, Natalie, would like to show you the attractions around her home town!
Fun in the sun ... that pretty well sums up Queensland's Gold Coast! The area is a magnet for international tourists, honeymooners, couples, families and anyone wanting a dose of anything ranging from total relaxation to full-on activity.
Dreamworld and Warner Bros Movie World are two of the most popular tourist attractions on the Gold Coast and are always adding exciting new attractions.
Movie World has joined the Harry Potter craze and opened the Chamber of Secrets Movie Magic Experience. You walk through fully reproduced sets and see lights, characters and artifacts from the film, starting at Weasley's kitchen, with a guide dressed as a wizard or witch. After trying to use flue powder in the fireplace, lights go out and you find yourself in the creepy Knockturn Alley.
You then reach Diagon Alley and the magic wand shop, complete with a real owl. Hagrid's Hut is the next stop, followed by the Forbidden Forest, which features a giant spider. Fortunately you are saved by Mr Weasley's enchanted flying blue car. The tour is suitable for every age.
There are also plenty of other popular attractions and sights to see at Movie World. Looney Tunes Village, Lethal Weapon, Police Academy Stunt Show, the Wild West Falls Adventure Ride with Indian reservations, ghost towns, geysers and wagon trains, to name just a few ... Plus, the Movie Magic Special Effects show demonstrates how filmmakers create "flying people" and a range of sound effects.
Then there's the parade along Main Street, which features lovable characters, superstars and superheroes from the big screen.
Nearby Dreamworld is on 2.5ha of land, making it the Gold Coast's largest tourism attraction. It now has the first Nickelodeon entertainment area outside the USA. It has 16 new rides, including the Runaway Reptar Rollercoaster which swoops, twists and turns to avoid a larger-than-life green dinosaur.
Meanwhile, Wild Thornberrys Rainforest Rampage is full of cannons which shoot out foam balls and offer a thrilling experience and a load of fun. The Slime Bowl is an open-air theatre featuring several shows during the day.
A really great way to check out the whole of the Gold Coast is with Gliding Adventures in a plane/glider. Their two-seater motorised gliders take off on engine power and at around 1300m, the engine is cut and you glide over a variety of places such as Coolangatta, Currumbin Valley, Mt Warning and the Hinterland. When you glide down to 150m, the engine is re-started and you come in for a smooth, controlled landing.
If you would rather cruise around Surfers Paradise on the ground, Atlas Scooters specialise in scooter and moped hire. These are similar to motorbikes but the bonus is they have no gears, thus making getting around very easy. Their motto is "no gears just twist and go".
Provided you are over 17 and have a current driver's licence, you can practice at the back of the shop and then are given a helmet and away you go!
