The first Versace hotel in the world has opened in Queensland. The designers of the new hotel wanted it to resemble Europe's grand castles and palaces and that is what they've achieved. The Palazzo Versace is reminiscent of the Europe of the 17th and 18th centuries.
Donatella Versace and her team were involved in the design and furnishings. They worked on it for three years, taking the hotel from dream to reality.
According to Santo Versace, his late brother Gianni had developed a homeware collection, so his next step would have been a hotel. However, he was murdered before the Palazzo Versace was thought of.
The hotel looks as though the designers were working with an unlimited budget. All furniture, marble, mosaic tiles, linen, dinnerware, artwork, bathroom amenities, dressing gowns and slippers were shipped from Italy. Five mosaic masters, with an average age of 67, were flown to Australia from Milan. It took these artisans a month to lay river stones in the porte cochere and to create the wonderful mosaic design at the lobby entrance. It took 900 manhours to do the tiling and the marble and mosaic tiles used in the lobby and restaurant cost $13 million.
The specifically-designed Versace carpet was handmade in China in one continuous pattern.
The lobby chandelier was purchased by Gianni Versace from the Milan State Library.
Each guestroom, hallway, corridor, the foyer and private dining room have prints of Versace designs. Certain rooms have been named by the Italian design team La Medusa Ballroom (the Greek mythological figure Gianni used as his corporate logo), Il Barocco (the main dining room) and Salus Per Aquum (the spa, meaning health through water).
There are 205 rooms, all with spa bath. Condominiums have their own splash pool and marina and there are 300 staff to ensure guests are pampered.
