Scuba Doo

Thursday, April 20, 2006

Great Adventures has been operating out of Cairns since 1988 and offers transfers, half and full day trips to Green Island, outer Barrier Reef trips and dive trips.

The Norman Reef pontoon is about two hours east of Cairns and that is where you need to go for the underwater adventure of a lifetime.

Great Adventures was the first company in Australia to offer Scuba Doo, which is really a Scuba BOB — Breathing Observation Bubble. With your head and shoulders in the clear dome, you are seated on your Scuba Doo and can enjoy the underwater reef experience without cumbersome masks or mouthpieces.

Anyone over the age of eight can ride one of these and you don't need a scuba licence. They are said to be physically impossible to tip, and for extra safety, they are supported by a floating buoy which will not allow it to go below four metres. This can be reduced if a more shallow tour is preferred.

A guide is always on hand for safety and to make sure the vessels don't go too close to the reef. Passengers can see 180° out of the bubble, and the acrylic dome gives the optical illusion of making everything appear closer.

They have a fully enclosed electric motor so there is no emission and with a top speed of 2.5 knots, there is no impact on the environment.

Fresh air is continually fed into the bubble from an attached tank and the machine is driven by aircraft-style steering wheels with just one button needed to get it moving.
