Catriona Rowntree got lucky and her search for fun and affordable holiday venues took her to Beachcomber Coconut Caravan Village at Mission Beach in Far North Queensland.
She thought she had found paradise. The village has wonderful palm-fringed beach frontage, looking directly at Dunk Island, Bedarra Island and the Family Islands. It is surrounded by lush rainforest and has more than two hectares of tropical landscaped gardens.
The award-winning park has accommodation for all budgets and tastes. There are villas and deluxe villas with spas, ensuite cabins, beachfront and standard cabins. There are also powered van sites and unpowered grass camping sites.
Beachcomber has a fabulous pool with slide, mushroom, waterfall and Balinese huts where you can relax and eat. There is a colourful playground area, half-court tennis, basketball hoops, campers' kitchen, kiosk, a BYO restaurant and barbecues. A local fruit and vegetable grower pays regular visits so you are able to buy fresh produce at the right price!
There are two amenities blocks, laundry, tours office and courtesy bus pick-up.
If you're worried about those nasty summer stingers spoiling your swim, fear not. There is a stinger-resistant enclosure.
Hire a boat for a day of fishing, a powered dinghy or body board — even a car if you want to explore the area. Water taxis will take you to Dunk Island for an outing, Quick Cat Scuba Adventures have fantastic diving adventures at Beaver Cay Marine Sanctuary or you might like to kayak in the Coral Sea.
Don't be surprised if a family of curious cassowaries comes by to see what you're up to.

Cost
Beachcomber Coconut Caravan Village beach front cabins are $75 in off-peak season and $85 in peak. They include a double bed, double bunk and lounge. Two-bedroom deluxe villas are $130 a double off-peak and $170 in peak. They have queen bedroom with spa, shower and toilet and the second room has a double and single bunk bed. They are air-conditioned, have two televisions, DVD player and full kitchen facilities. Camping is $30 a double during off-peak and $34 in peak.
