In the heart of north Queensland's Atherton Tablelands is the award-winning Mt Quincan Crater Retreat. The architecturally-designed pole cabins offer luxurious accommodation in a tropical paradise of 60 hectares. There are 60 droughtmaster cattle on the property and which freely wander.
The six timber treehouses have been delicately placed in the rainforest on the slopes of Mt Quincan Crater, separated by beautiful trees. Two cabins are actually in the crater and the other four are on its outer rim. No one is sure of the age of the crater, but it is estimated to be between 10,000 and 100,000 years old.
Each cabin has a king bed, comfortable sofa and wood fire. The fireplace swivels so it can be seen and enjoyed wherever you are in the cabin.
All have a double spa with plate glass windows overlooking the tablelands and three have interior double showers as well as totally private outdoor showers.
Kitchens are fully equipped and the pantry has lots of delightful surprises such as hams, marmalade and local honey, muffins and coffee. Dinner hampers are available if required. Breakfast can be enjoyed on your verandah. Rare tree-climbing kangaroos are regular visitors. There are fluffy towelling robes, television, VCR, complete sound system and laundry facilities.
Recently built Canopy Cabins have double spa and double shower, secluded deck and shower in the privacy of the treetops.
Owners Kerry and Barb Kehoe know the area well and can give good advice on tours and day trips. They can also arrange for you to enjoy a therapeutic massage in your cabin.
An hour south-west of Cairns.
