Yungaburra on northern Queensland's Atherton Tablelands is a delightful, heritage-listed village. Established in 1890, it is filled with charming buildings and friendly locals and is small enough to stroll around but large enough to cater for visitors' needs. It has exceptional art and craft galleries, excellent places to eat and the grand Lake Eacham Hotel.
On The Wallaby is a highly-regarded backpacker's lodge. Its common area resembles a mountain hut with rough-edged wood furniture and a wood-burning stove. Bathrooms and showers are sided with stone and wood.
Thirty-five people can be accommodated at On The Wallaby in dormitory and twin rooms and there are camping sites as well.
Bedrooms are clean and fresh and all linen is supplied. There are excellent laundry facilities, self-serve kitchen and cosy lounge with a pot belly stove. There's plenty of hot tea and coffee on hand and nightly get-togethers around the barbecue are very popular. On the Wallaby offers sunrise and sunset platypus spotting from specially built viewing platforms at Peterson Creek and Alumbah Pocket.
You will see flying foxes, ringtail possums, water dragons and maybe platypus on night canoeing tours, and you can go for an afternoon paddle.
The establishment is owned by Paul Harris who is from Cairns. He has travelled extensively within Australia and in Europe, and with a family background of hotels, certainly knows what travellers are looking for.
The Tablelands has a wealth of natural assets including rainforest which is home to birds, including the earth-bound cassowary, lots of rare possums and the adorable tree kangaroo. There are waterfalls, lakes and excellent opportunities for walking, cycling, canoeing or just driving.
Yungaburra, an hour south-west of Cairns.
