Time to check out the reef

Paul & Kylie's far north Qld

Thursday, October 30, 2003
Paul & Kylie are far from The Block this week as they are living it up with some romance on the reef.

Palm Cove is a sleepy resort town and the Outrigger Beach Club and Spa there is the perfect place for a romantic getaway.

Paul and Kylie from The Block were asked to check it out for us … and they loved it so much it was difficult to get them to leave!

The Outrigger is one of North Queensland's most sophisticated boutique resorts. It is wonderfully tranquil and overlooks the palm-fringed beach.

There are 180 rooms and when stage three is completed at the end of this year there will be 220 rooms in total.

Its lagoon-style swimming pool has a cascading waterfall, sand beach and swim-up pool bar. It is surrounded by lush tropical gardens. The formal pool has an outdoor jacuzzi.

There are one- and two-bedroom suites with fully equipped kitchen just in case you want to cook up a romantic dinner.

Thirty-two penthouses have either ocean or lagoon pool views and clear glass plunge pools on the top floor balconies.

The Sanctum Spa offers a range of seven set and dry treatment rooms and a menu of 45 spa treatments designed for both men and women. Its qualified therapists look at clients' lifestyle, habits and needs and then design treatments. They use Phytomer products, which are based on seaweeds and algaes from Tasmania, Chile and Brittany.

Breakfast on the Reef tours include a scenic helicopter flight over Green Island and the unique, boomerang-shaped Arlington Reef, one of the largest off Cairns. The helicopter lands in the middle of the reef on Vlasoff Cay, which is secluded and surrounded by wonderful reef and crystal blue waters 15 nautical miles off the coast.

Vince Vlassoff created Australia's first underwater observatory on Green Island in 1955 and it is still operating. He sank an old WWII diving bell to the ocean floor allowing people to climb down and experience reefscape in observatory conditions.

You stay for two hours on the sandy cay and champagne breakfast or brunch is served under shady umbrellas. Brunch includes smoked salmon salad, prawns, fresh fruit, pastries, juice, water and wine.
