Cairns Accommodation

Thursday, February 27, 2003
We've put together a mini accommodation guide, taking into consideration not only your length of stay, but the size of your wallet.

Cairns is the gateway to far north Queensland and thanks to world heritage rainforests and the world's most wonderful coral reef, it attracts thousands of visitors every day. There are 6000 beds available for visitors and we have checked out some examples to help you decide where you would like to stay.

The Sofitel Reef Hotel is Cairns' premier luxury hotel and covers an entire block, just a walk away from the departure point to the Great Barrier Reef. All 128 rooms have spa baths and tropical garden balconies and there are views over Trinity Inlet to one side and the city of Cairns to the other.

There are superior, executive and junior suites and a presidential suite with separate dining and lounge rooms, kitchen, enormous bathroom, small office and an interconnecting room for butler, babysitter, security, babysitter or chef.

Villa Vaucluse is an intimate four-star property with 18 apartments, 10 of which overlook the pool and tropical gardens. Each apartment has a bedroom and living room with sofa bed. They are air-conditioned and have a balcony, washing machine, dryer and kitchenette. Close to restaurants, entertainment and shops, they are a family-run operation. Villa Vaucluse is perfect as a base for trips to the reef, the Atherton Tablelands, Port Douglas, the Skyrail and the Kuranda Scenic Rail.

Sunland Carapark Inn is just 4km from the city centre and has a four-star rating. There is a barbecue area, television rooms, camp kitchen, swimming and wading pools and an on-site mini-mart. Tour companies pick up and drop off at the doorstep and there is luggage and vehicle storage available.

They are close to major shopping centres, sporting facilities, churches, clubs and lots of eating places. The choice of accommodation is wide. Deluxe Villas have two bedrooms with queen bed in the main room and double and single in the second. A double sofa in the living room turns into a bed. Air-conditioning, television, bathroom, kitchenette and a large verandah make Sunland a great family venue.

Relax-A-Cabins have three single bunks, a double bed and fold out divan. They are air-conditioned, have television, toilet, shower, outdoor furniture and comfortably accommodate seven people. A cabin suitable for disabled travellers has a queen bed and fold-out divan. It can accommodate up to four. Budget cabins have a double bed and two single bunks. Air-conditioning is an optional extra but there are ceiling fans. Backpackers are catered for and the camping and van site has coin-operated laundries and amenities. The camp kitchen has refrigerators, freezer, microwave, hotplates and undercover picnic facilities.

Zanzoo Retreat was built in the 1870s and for 130 years was used mainly for farming. It stands on several hectares of tropical rainforest in a fresh water valley, surrounded by mountains, wonderful tropical gardens, lawns and native timber forests. Freshwater Creek flows the length of the property and greatly adds to the tranquil ambience. Zanzoo Retreat is a place of natural beauty and relaxation.

Zanzoo has a fascinating history — it was a hospice for allied offers serving in the Coral Sea and Papua New Guinea during WWII and on the Kuranda's scenic rail's ascent through the cane fields, you will see a monument to the medical staff who served there. During the 1950s it was a very popular tea house.

There are six guest rooms — three downstairs with queen beds and shared bathrooms, and three upstairs with private en-suites, one with spa. They are fully air-conditioned with verandah or balcony and views of Freshwater Creek and Palm Gardens.

There are furnished lounges upstairs and downstairs, a main kitchen, refrigerators, microwaves and barbecues. Management will arrange in-house dining if you wish and there are excellent restaurants and a typical Queensland pub just minutes away.
