Fortitude Valley

Thursday, May 31, 2007

Fortitude Valley, know simply as The Valley, was once considered a down-at-heel pocket of the city. Over the past decade is has emerged as one of Brisbane's liveliest and most progressive precincts. It has a flourishing cultural community, a huge party scene and loads of good places to eat, morning, noon and night.

If you want to go and check it out, the first thing to do is to find somewhere to stay. Bunk Backpackers offers budget accommodation for under 35s and caters mainly for international backpackers. Bunk offers 4/6/8 share dorms and twins/doubles/triples all with air conditioning and ensuite bathroom. Single private rooms are also available. Rooms have lockers, individual reading lights and privacy screens. Fresh linen and a cosy duvet await you and there's no need to wear thongs in the shower — bathrooms are squeaky clean. It has a great courtyard and pool, and a nightclub called Birdee Num Num which attracts in-house guests and locals. Sunday sessions have a barbecue, beer and DJs. There is a laundry, Internet lounge, communal television room and kitchen, travel and information desks.

Brisbane based singer-songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke is classically-trained and has a high profile as an opera singer. In 2004 she released her self-financed, self-distributed seven track debut record Telegram and while purists saw it as a distraction from her real path as an opera/cabaret performer, Kate saw her future there. She knows her way around the music venues of The Valley and was happy to take Getaway's Jason Dundas to some.

Ric's Café & Bar/Fatboys
Live music every night and weekend afternoons. Entry to all shows is free and audience age depends on the band. Fatboys is the 24-hour café next door and pundits say the food gets better and better.

The Troubadour
A funky, intimate music venue. Entering the Troubadour is like walking into a '70s lounge, full of like-minded music fanatics. It was opened by two musicians who wanted to create a great atmosphere for enjoying music — comfortable couches and top sound — just like at home. Fans line walls, the bar and sit on the floor, just soaking in the music.

The Zoo
Brisbane's longest-standing live music venue/nightclub, The Zoo caters to the independent end of the music spectrum. They open between Wednesday and Saturday and in any week you could enjoy beats, hip hop, jazz, rock and pop, acoustic, folk, dub and reggae.

Lucid Laundry Boutique
A metamorphosis! Under the building which housed Rupert Murdoch's first printing press, complete with babbling brook, is Lucid Laundry. It's a must to visit — with fantastic clothing from Australia, Italy, France, the UK and the United States.
