Brisbane Night Skating

Thursday, October 3, 2002
Every Friday night around 20,000 people put their rollerblades on and skate around Paris. The trend is spreading and night skating has hit Brisbane.

Skatebiz started up early this year and they say the benefits are that it's great for fitness, it's social and you see so much more than being stuck in a gym for hours.

Every city has its own rules and in Brisbane the skaters are allowed on bike paths and footpaths — pretty well anywhere except the Queen Street Mall.

Skaters meet each Wednesday at the Goodwill Bridge Pavilion. Safety gear and helmets can be hired if you don't have your own.

Ten staff are always present — one leads, one follows and the others spread out along the group. They give pointers if you feel you could do with some.

The group heads over the pedestrian bridge and heads to Southbank. They go along Coronation Drive's cycle path which follows the river. Advanced skaters can really get going here — they do some speed skating backwards and forwards and it's a great place to warm up.

The group then loops back to the city and over the bridge that links the art gallery to the CBD. Then it's time for a cool drink.

Next it's to the alleyway behind Queen Street Mall through to Adelaide Street, past Anzac Square which is a good place for skaters to show some of the expertise such as stair jumping and riding the stairs.

Then the group crosses Post Office Square which has a slight descent and to Pier Nine to skate alongside the water and the one kilometre boardwalk.

Then it's uphill to cross the Story Bridge along the wide pedestrian path.

After two hours of whizzing around, the tour finishes at Kangaroo Point cliffs, a great place to cool off.

The city of Brisbane.
