XXXX Brewery Tour

Thursday, June 15, 2000
Ben has found the tour of all tours for true beer-lovers: the XXXX brewery tour.

If you want to put their beer to the test you can participate in one of their tours, which have been running since 1964. They take 45 minutes and include a tasting at the end.

The tours begin with a short video showing the history of brewing, particularly the history of Castlemaine-Perkins. Then you see the brewing line, where each brew takes two weeks to complete. These days a large part of the process is mechanised, but there are still about 240 tests that have to be carried out manually.

The kegs are filled, bunged and rolled onto trucks and the packaging line is where stubbies, bottles and cans are filled, labelled and packed into cartons.

In 1999 they knocked down part of the old brewery to make way for a new brewhouse. They sold the bricks in four hours for $5 each and gave the proceeds of $20,000 to charity.

The Castlemaine-Perkins Brewery is in Brisbane.

Tours take place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, or by special appointment, and cost $7 per person, including a tasting at the end. They last about 45 minutes. For safety reasons, open-toed shoes, sandals or thongs cannot be worn.
Please note prices are valid at time of transmission.
