Great Ocean Road walk

Thursday, June 26, 2008
Suzanne Brownsworth felt she needed some exercise and began, grudgingly, to start walking regularly. Twenty years on she's still walking and feeling great. She began to walk with other women and with encouragement from friends who enjoyed it so much, started providing holidays especially for women in Australia.

Women Walking began on Queensland's Sunshine Coast and has grown to take in other spectacular locations. They provide the chance for women to be physically active and to safely explore new places together. There are coffee breaks and meals are shared. If you find somewhere you would like to spend more time, that's fine. Stay there and catch up with the group the next day.

There is lots of laughter and you walk at your own pace with no one minding if you linger over a beautiful wildflower or special view.

Getaway joined the Great Ocean Road walk along 91km of track hugging the coastline of the Great Otway and Port Campbell national parks.

Victoria's Great Ocean Road is breathtakingly beautiful. It passes through the resort towns of Torquay, Lorne and Apollo Bay, the cities of Geelong and Warrnambool, the villages of Queenscliff, Port Campbell, Port Fairy and Portland. It takes in the Twelve Apostles, the Otways rainforest and Bells Beach.

Cape Otway Light Station is used as a base for the seven-day tour. The walk requires a certain level of fitness as tracks are graded moderate to challenging. You can expect to cover nine to 15 kilometres on foot each day.

4WD vehicles are used to take you to the start of the top tracks, enabling you to spend more time at beautiful locations.

It's a good idea to limit your luggage and they have put together a list suggesting what to take at
