1770 is a village on the site of Captain James Cook's second landing on the Australian continent. It is a popular tourist destination on the Discovery Coast inside the Joseph Banks Environmental Park. Situated on a peninsula, the Coral Sea and Bustard Bay are on three sides.

The town has a small permanent population which often swells with tourists wishing to enjoy its fishing and other water activities. Wildlife and vegetation have been preserved as far as possible and there is an outer surf and inner still water beach.

There are many cruises and flights to the outer Great Barrier Reef and the nearer Lady Musgrave and Lady Elliot Islands, Fitzroy Reef, Pancake Creek and historic Bustard Head lighthouse.

Scooter Roo Tours has three-hour chopper roo tours. The route taken is wide and smooth and without much traffic. You take the hills around Agnes Water, along the headland to 1770 and back again.

There is a simple safety chat before you take off and if you haven't ridden for a while, knee pads are recommended.

Rod Sheridan, the owner, has a passion for motorbikes. He has 35 custom-built, smaller-sized choppers for Chopper Roo Tours. These are colourful and fun, modelled on the classic Harley bikes. All you need is a driver's licence.

1770 Southern Cross Tourist Retreat is a purpose-built eco-friendly hostel on a 5.6 hectare block minutes from the centre of town and beautiful beaches. It's family owned and operated and prides itself on giving first-rate and friendly service.

They offer beds in three-share rooms with ensuite and balcony and private double rooms with queen bed, ensuite, balcony and television.

Motorcycles are a fantastic way to travel and having travelled throughout the Uk and Europe opn one I roundly applaud anything that encourages their use, but you must wear proper safety equipment. A helmet, jacket, gloves and stout shoes as a minimum. The road does not get softer just because the sun is out! No matter how careful you are as a rider there are bad roads and bad drivers out there. It was sad to see this valuable advice missing from the piece that was promoting such a great idea.
