Sounds of Silence
Thursday, September 28, 2000
According to David, the Sounds of Silence is Australia's most unbelievable experience. If you're heading outback NT, you'd be mad to miss this.
Getaway presenter David Reyne has been to some pretty amazing places during his time with the show, but he reckons the Sounds of Silence must be Australia’s most unbelievable experience. Others must agree, because it was voted Australia’s Best Tourism Restaurant in 1997, 1998 and 1999, has been inducted into the Tourism Hall of Fame and is becoming an outback institution.
Every evening 50 guests from the Ayers Rock Resort venture out to watch the sun set over Uluru and Kata Tjuta. As soon as the sun goes down guests take their seats for the Sounds of Silence dinner, a gourmet bush barbecue under the stars.
This is a restaurant that makes no apologies for its dirt floors and lack of air conditioning. A typical meal is soup, followed by a bush tucker barbecue of kangaroo, crocodile and local bush chutneys. A vegetarian menu is also available.
Once the meal is over, staff dim the gas lamps and guests enjoy the nocturnal splendour of the desert. With virtually no light or pollution, the outback provides almost uninterrupted stargazing. Local astronomer Laskar Burra is on hand to help you navigate your way around the stars, planets and galaxies.
For a quintessentially Australian experience, it's difficult to go past a trip to Ayers Rock.
Twenty kilometres north of the Ayers Rock Resort.
