Gunya Resort

Thursday, August 4, 2005

Gunya Titjikala, Australia's first exclusive Aboriginal resort, offers the ultimate indigenous experience. In remote desert in the country's Red Centre, you are guests of an Aboriginal community. Experiences include learning about Aboriginal art, culture, landscapes, the Dreamtime and bush tucker, plus just interacting with locals and their culture.

The people of Titjikala belong to the Arrente, Luritja and Pitjantjara clans. People started gathering in the area in the 1950s when the mission truck visited every six weeks. In 1953 there were only six people living in what is now known as Titjikala. Now there are more than three hundred.

The joint venture between Gunya Tourism and the Titjikala Aboriginal Community means they employ only local indigenous labour, ensuring a truly authentic cultural experience. Fifty percent of all profits go directly to the Titjikala Foundation, focusing on health, education and school retention initiatives.

A highlight of the resort is the ability to go bush with traditional owners on a day tour and learn survival knowledge of the world's oldest living culture. Visit the historic Chambers Pillar and collect bush tucker on the way home to complement your gourmet evening meal.

Accommodation is in three deluxe safari tents sitting on polished timber flooring two metres above red sand dunes. You have a private ensuite with free-standing bath and eco friendly flush toilet. A private deck has views across the Simpson Desert and from there you enjoy unpolluted, starry night skies and the type of glorious sunrises and sunsets that happen only in the desert.

Gunya Titjikala's resident chef prepares three gourmet meals each day. He fuses western-style dishes to local edibles such as witchetty grubs, wild fruits and berries.

120 kilometres south of Alice Springs.

Tents start at $1300 a night. All meals, drinks and activities are included. There is a minimum two-night stay.

Please note that the prices listed are valid at the time of filming.
