Wycliffe Well

Thursday, July 17, 2003
Wycliffe Well was established in the 1860s as the main watering hole for the stock route and later the telegraph line. It was the Territory's first place to be given rights to sell water — at a penny a gallon in those days it was an expensive and precious commodity, even though the quality was not all that good.

During WW2, a two-hectare vegetable farm provided for troops who were stationed further up the Stuart Highway.

There are those who believe Wycliffe Well is on a cross-section of ley or energy lines, so that any UFOs which happen to be in the area will pass through. In fact, Wycliffe Well is ranked fifth in the world for reported UFO sightings.

Night is particularly dark in this part of the world. People often say they have seen bright lights in the sky here — some even report figures and strange objects. Wycliffe Well claims to have Australia's largest range of beer — maybe there is a connection?

Wycliffe Well Holiday Park is on 24ha and has 25 on-site accommodation options. There are 60 powered sites and 120 unpowered camping sites on lawn under fruit trees, plus on-site cabins which are air-conditioned with all linen and towels provided.

Just 300m from Lake Wycliffe, a new four-hectare lake is being built. It will hold 150 million litres of water. Meantime there is an indoor pool complex for guests. There are barbecue facilities, two licensed restaurants, games room, art gallery, spotless amenity blocks and an animal sanctuary with kangaroos, emus, donkeys and camels.

The Galaxy Auditorium seats 300 people and has a fully-licensed bar, restaurant and stage. The star-filled sky can be seen while dining or watching the floor show.

A bonus in the area is the Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve. The gigantic granite rocks, some more than six metres across, are perched one on another, defying gravity. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to view them. Every story you hear about how they came to be is fascinating — and believable.
