Palm Beach lifestyle

Thursday, March 30, 2006
Palm Beach is as far as you can drive north along the narrow Pittwater Peninsula. It is blessed with a long surfing beach on its eastern side and the calm Pittwater to the west.

It has bushland, cafés and restaurants, a beautiful golf course, seaplanes and ferries, boating and kayaking and all sorts of accommodation.

It has always been a popular holiday destination and recently the likes of John Cleese, Billy Connolly, Nicole Kidman, Mick Jagger and Donald Trump have discovered the secret. We thought we would have a look at some of the wonderful properties these people choose to holiday in.

First is Kalua, one of the first homes built in the area. Built in the 1920s by the Hordern family, it is on almost a hectare of land.

The plantation-style home with wide verandahs has six bedrooms, six full bathrooms, pool, sauna, tennis court, cabana, chipping green and separate gardener's cottage. The spacious master bedroom, which occupies the entire top floor, has a full entertainment system, his and hers walk-in wardrobes and outdoor shower.

The airy and tropically designed house is surrounded by palms, fruit trees and a variety of aromatic shrubs.

Lanai, a five-bedroom house, is one of the most sought after in the area. It has spectacular views across the ocean, even enjoyed from the spa in the master bedroom.

The house comes with a heated pool, cabana, air conditioning, barbecue by the pool and is child-friendly. The house even has an internal lift.

Illowra is private, luxurious and has magnificent views. It is on the southern headland of Whale Beach and enjoys northerly views of the coast.

It has three bedrooms, solar-heated pool and according to the agent responsible for its rental, is the most popular house on his books.

The Palm Beach Lifesaving Club was established in 1921. It has two adjacent and exclusive clubs — Cabbage Tree and Pacific. They were established for surf lifesaving members who had finished service but wish to be affiliated. One was for men and one for women and it was only in the early 1980s that women were allowed membership to the men's club!

Lifesavers patrol the beach on weekends and public holidays and are all club members, volunteering their time to keep swimmers safe.
