Blue Sydney

Thursday, April 9, 2009
Even Giaan Rooney, a die-hard Queenslander, has to admit that Sydney Harbour is hard to beat as a location, but when she visited Blue Sydney hotel in Woolloomooloo she was blown away.

Once known as W Hotel, the boutique property is just five minutes from Sydney's CBD and is built on the heritage wooden wharf jutting over the lapping waters of the harbour.

The new owners have dramatically changed the décor. The water bar is dripping with a wall of Swarovski crystal and has been named "Bar of the Year" and "Best Bar" by various industry bodies, and Condé Nast Traveller has it as one of the top 10 in the world.

Blue Café serves the Big Breakfast and classic café fare. You never know who will be at the next table. It's quite the place for celebrities to be seen — Delta Goodrem and Brian McFadden, cricketer Steve Waugh, Megan Gale, Daniel McPherson and Natalie Bassingthwaighte have been spotted. And Russell Crowe and his family live in a $14 million apartment in the complex.

There are 100 guest rooms, including 36 loft rooms. All have the charm of the historic wharf building, blended with the latest in modern luxury. They offer views of Woolloomooloo Bay Village or across the harbour to the city.

There is a fitness facility with state-of-the-art equipment, heated indoor pool and sun deck. For five-star treatment, Spa Chakra is open to guests and the public and is a one-stop shop for holistic pampering.

If you don't fancy eating out, restaurants will deliver and charge to your room. Still, it's always fun to be outside to spot celebrities dodging the paparazzi.

When you do go out, there is so much within easy reach — galleries, museums, beaches, the Opera House, Royal Botanic Gardens and the historic Rocks area.
