Manly Bike Tour

Thursday, December 3, 2009
Cycling your way around a city is quite possibly the best way to see it. From Rome to Rockhampton you will see visitors happily pedalling their way around, sometimes with a guide, sometimes just meandering.

Manly, a northern beachside suburb of Sydney, just lends itself to hopping on a bicycle weaving your way through the many sights.

Manly Bike Tours know all the great things to see and 20km of cycle paths make it an easy way for you to see North Head, Manly Lagoon and Shelly Beach — all the while taking in some of the best views in the city.

St Patrick's College is a magnificent castle-like building. Once a seminary, it is now a hospitality school, but the grounds are open to the public. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban chose it as their wedding venue in 2006.

You could see dolphins or whales, and there is even a penguin colony on Manly's harbour side.

North Fort Museum and Lookout allows riders to explore the military history of Manly. It's also where everyone enjoys a well-earned ice-cream.

Fairfax Walking Track at North Head is a short walk off the cycle path, but gives you one of Sydney's best vantage points. Fantastic for photographs of the city skyline across the harbour.

It's never easy to have a Queenslander rave about something from New South Wales, but after her day of cycling around Manly, Natalie Gruzlewski had to admit it was.

Manly is, as the Port Jackson & Manly Steamship Company described it, "seven miles from Sydney, a thousand miles from care".

Manly Experience 2 hour tours cost $69 and start at 10:30am each day. Cost includes bicycle, helmet, light refreshments, guide and access to North Fort Museum and St Patrick's Estate. They operate year round. Self-guided bicycle hire is also available.

Virgin Blue has flights to Sydney.
