Emerald Valley in Byron Bay

Thursday, November 6, 2008
Emerald Valley Villa is a scenic 25-minute drive west from Byron Bay, Australia's most easterly point. The beautiful area is renowned for pristine beaches, clean ocean, lush rainforests and hinterland.

Poised in hinterland above an area that inspired its name, Emerald Valley Villa is a five-star private estate with resort-style facilities. It is adjacent to a vast national park which includes Mignon Falls and walks through rainforest and a valley of palms. Rocky Creek Dam is a pleasant attraction with beautiful forest surrounding the lake and magical walkways by the creek.

The villa comfortably accommodates up to eight people and is a perfect model of sustainable living without compromising luxury or technology. All buildings and surrounding grounds were designed to have minimal impact on the environment, are climate neutral and run on 100 percent green power.

Asian-inspired architecture presents a balance of wood, glass, stone and metal, resulting in space, comfort and pleasing aesthetics. Stunning Balinese reliefs, ceramics filled with body-care products, elegant orchids — everything that adds up to divine luxury has been thought of.

The master suite and three large bedrooms are air-conditioned and open onto broad verandahs overlooking verdant tropical gardens in one direction and a stone courtyard with water features in the other direction. Fine linens have been used and the master suite has a wood-burning fireplace. Bathrooms are sumptuous with dark teak, pale marble, deep tub and showers.

Mother Nature has thoughtfully supplied an ancient aquifer which supplies the entire villa and grounds with delicious soft spring water of the highest standard of purity. It is used for drinking, showering and swimming. The 17m × 4m pool is 100 percent chlorine- and salt-free. It is surrounded by a wide terrace of Palimanan flagstones and decorated with carved Balinese fountains. There is a gas barbecue, refrigerator, mobile stainless steel servery and bar, so entertaining poolside is a snap.

The large open-plan kitchen has the best available fuel stove and refrigerator, solid teak cabinetry, polished granite bench tops and restaurant-quality utilities. The teak table seats 12 and a circular dining table on the verandas seats up to eight. For poolside dining, two 200-year-old Javanese rice barns are perfect.

The central living area is spacious and comfortable. It opens to the surrounding verandas and pool terrace. Television and a sound system provide light entertainment. In cooler months, the entire floor surface is evenly heated by an eco-friendly thermal system.

Spa facilities using Byron's best therapists offer a wide range of healing methods including Swedish therapeutic, deep-tissue, Shiatsu, Thai and other massage styles. There is organic aromatherapy spa renewal and beauty treatments, yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi and personal trainers on request. A spacious, polished marble steam room with heated benches helps ease aches, pains and tension. An open-air, freshwater spa in the garden overlooks the valley.

Concierge is on hand to arrange full catering of simple meals through to sumptuous banquets. Name your cuisine — Italian, Indian, Japanese, Middle Eastern, Asian and vegetarian — and they've got it covered.
