Hughenden Hotel

Thursday, September 8, 2005

The Hughenden Hotel is a gracious Victorian residence which was built by Dr Frederick Harrison Quaife around 1870. The hotel is on beautiful leafy Queen Street in Sydney's affluent Woollahra.

Guests delight in wandering through the old mansion's hallways and admiring objects from the past — black marble fireplaces, servants' bells and the wrought-iron grand staircase.

Furniture and furnishings echo the 19th century, with oak tables, high ceilings and a grand piano. Each of the 36 bedrooms is individually styled. Dr Quaife's room overlooks beautiful Centennial Park. And the hotel has two pet-friendly rooms, one with a small atrium.

Quaife's on Queen is a restaurant suitable for family celebrations, business meetings or romantic dinners. They offer a la carte dining from Tuesday to Saturday from 6pm and on Fridays and Saturdays diners can enjoy the gentle sounds of the grand piano. The winter fireplace is welcoming and in warm months shade is provided by magnificent liquid ambers.

Colonial high tea is served in the Victorian Lounge every Sunday in winter between 3-5pm. Finger sandwiches, fluffy scones with whipped cream, tea cakes, sweets and pastries, chocolate-dipped strawberries and a choice of loose-leaf teas and coffee are on the menu.

Special days are celebrated too — Melbourne Cup Day, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Yuletide in July with full Christmas fare.

The Hughenden also has intimate theatre productions. The Victoriana Society of New South Wales was launched here. There is a permanent exhibition of children's literature and illustrations and each month a group of crime writers meets, with occasional special guest speakers.

The hotel is close to the Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney Football Stadium, Fox Studios and Centennial and Moore Parks. The genteel Queen and Ocean streets offer an array of boutique clothes and antiques shops, galleries, cafés and restaurants. Around the corner is Oxford Street, which also has excellent shopping and eating and nightspots.

Sydney's CBD is just two kilometres away and Bondi Junction Plaza and Bondi Beach are easily accessible.
