Sydney Aquarium

Thursday, February 7, 2008
Sydney Aquarium is just minutes from the CBD and is the perfect place to spend a couple of hours.

Nowhere else is there a larger collection of Australian aquatic life. It has over 12,000 animals including sharks, rays, platypus, seals, fairy penguins, crocodiles and many more.

You take the journey through one of the world's most spectacular aquariums to explore Australia's rich and diverse waterways, marine eco-systems and environments.

Underwater tunnels are a great way to view the all-Australian aquatic animals in the Great Barrier Reef Oceanarium.

There are exhibits depicting the southern and northern rivers, as well as southern and northern oceans.

Skull and crossbones signs alert visitors to dangerous creatures such as sharks, stonefish which have 13 lethal dorsal spines, blue-ringed octopus, saltwater crocodiles and the male platypus — which has two 15mm spurs containing a gland of strong toxins. There are plenty of others, and most of them don't look the slightest bit dangerous.

Keep your eyes open for feeding times. They vary so you can go from one session to another.

It's fun to follow the adventures of Splash, a water droplet who was happily living on the Great Barrier Reef. During a wet season he was sucked into a water spout and travelled in a cloud until he is dumped in the dry Murray Darling drainage region. Then begins his journey as he tries to get back home.

There are games to play, competitions to enter and you can even adopt one of the animals.
