Jules digs deep into Sydney’s ghostly past in the Rocks. Are you ready to be spooked?
Most residents of and visitors to Sydney have enjoyed walking through the Sydney Rocks area. The historically significant area is nestled at the foot of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and has been described as Sydney's outdoors museum.
The area has been transformed into a vibrant place of cafes and restaurants, tourist shops, galleries and excellent hotels, without any detriment to the importance of its history.
Town planners have placed sensitive conservation orders on The Rocks so its importance to the development of the city will remain for future generations.
Rocks Ghost Tours is a spooky but fun walking tour of the area. Brian and Colleen Harrison started Spirit of Sydney 15 or so years ago after much research.
Brian is a third generation Rocks resident and Colleen is a descendent of a convict of the First Fleet, so the area is in their blood.
Colleen swears she saw a ghost at Observatory Hill. Dressed in a black cape and top hat, it came from behind a tree. She believes it was her uncle who was a magician.
She also believes she has a ghost living in her home and often hears footsteps on the stairs in the middle of the night. As she believes there are only friendly ghosts, she has no fear.
Colleen is the Ghost Host for Dark South Side tours, leading groups through narrow cobblestone lanes and alleys to the inner part of the Rocks. She carries a lantern and members of the group each carry a torch, and along the way you hear stories of murders, suicides, hangings, ghost stories and snippets of history.
Tours start at Cadman's Cottage and everyone is given an identity. As the tours go on, the story relating to the person whose name they have "borrowed" will be related.
You'll certainly be entertained during your tour, and will also learn some interesting and amusing facts about the historic area.
