Guide to Beaches

Sunday, November 23, 2003
Get the guide to the Sydney beaches, where the waves are, where the pools are and where the fun is at.

In Sydney, except in the far western suburbs, you're never more than half an hour away from one of the popular Sydney beaches. Between the Royal National Park in the south and the Hawkesbury River in the north, the city is dotted with beaches starting from the endless stretch of beaches at Cronulla up to the ever-popular Palm Beach.

Around Botany Bay, you'll find Lady Robinson Beach at Brighton le Sands and Silver Beach at Kurnell, and then the Cronulla beaches stretching from the Kurnell Peninsula and winding in a golden arc through Cronulla, Wanda, Elouera, North Cronulla and South Cronulla beaches, perfect for extra-long walks and a deep communion with sun and sea.

The city beaches come next with Maroubra, Coogee, Clovelly, Bronte, Tamarama and the famous Bondi Beach.

East of the Bridge across Port Jackson is Shark Beach, a cosy intimate little beach at Nielsen Park in Vaucluse. Around Middle Harbour and Sydney Harbour, there are a number of other mainly smaller beaches, such as Clontarf, Chinamans, Balmoral, and Obelisk, with Balmoral the largest of these and tiny Obelisk a favourite of nude sunbathers.

Manly Beach is a bustling visitors' mecca with restaurants and a variety of shops along the Corso and an aquarium and amusement pier at Manly Cove. The beach faces the Pacific on the east, but you can take a leisurely stroll west along the Corso to smaller beaches facing Manly Cove on the North Harbour. It's at Manly Cove that the Manly ferry from Circular Quay docks.

Then it's up to Freshwater, Curl Curl and Long Reef, the long stretch of the Narrabeen-Collaroy Beaches, Warriewood, Mona Vale, Bungan, Newport, Bilgola, Avalon and Whale Beach.

Palm Beach is a finger of land ending north at the Barrenjoey Head and you can walk from the beach on the Pacific side to Barrenjoey Beach on the western side facing Pittwater. Across Pittwater are Great Mackerel Beach and Currawong Beach east of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.
