Sydney Harbour self-cruise

Thursday, November 23, 2006

It's not just Sydneysiders who think their harbour is the most beautiful in the world. Flying over it, viewing it from the foreshores or enjoying it from a boat all provoke admiring comments.

Sydney Harbour Escapes can set you up on one of their Arvor boats so that you and your friends can enjoy a day on the water all by yourselves. You can explore the bays and beaches just as you please by self-driving one of their nifty little boats — and no previous experience is necessary. No licence is required for boats travelling under eight knots. If you have a boating licence, you can rent a faster Arvor for a slightly higher cost.

Dom Coleman owns the company and can set you up with one of their 20-footers for half or full-day hire. If you're a first-timer, you will be given a briefing, then you head off from Rose Bay in whichever direction you choose! The boats are extremely stable, very easy to drive, have a shaded cockpit, cabin toilet, two children's bunks and CD stereo. They carry up to eight passengers.

Every boat has approved safety equipment, all-round safety rail, two-way radio and life jackets. There is a marlin board with swim ladder. If you plan to do some fishing, there is built-in cooler, bait-cutting board, rod holders and live bait tank and you can rent a digital fish finder, tackle box, rods and hand lines.

If you just want to take a leisurely trip around the harbour, admire the beautiful waterside homes and maybe moor at a secluded spot for lunch, there's a book on board which will tell you everything about Sydney Harbour.

Instead of packing food and drinks, why not head under the Harbour Bridge and tie up at the Sydney Fish Markets in Blackwattle Bay? Step onto the wharf, go to any of the seafood restaurants and order as much take-away seafood as you want — hot or cold. Our crew headed to Peter's Fish Market, which has an amazing selection of the freshest-possible delicacies. There is a great delicatessen, a wonderful fruit and vegetable market and liquor store. The next big decision is where to anchor and enjoy the feast!
